Recover lost or deleted Digital Photo

A digital photo is a computer file from a digital camera or scanner that is made up of sequence of pixels. When a digital camera takes a shot, it needs to convert the raw image data from the sensor, into a standardized file format for storage on a memory card.

The commonest digital image formats are JPEG, TIFF and RAW. Most photographers choose to shoot in JPEG as this file format offers a very good exchange between file size and image quality with variety of options in compression. Even RAW photos offer the highest possible image quality but have greater requirements in file size, even though they are popular and are treated as digital negatives.

The most common reasons for the damage of photo files are:

  • Accidental deletion of an image file
  • Accidental formatting of entire memory card that holds image files
  • Memory card/hard drive error
  • File transfer/interface error

Whatever be the reason, lost/deleted photo files can be recovered. You may be able to recover some or almost all the lost/deleted images if they are still intact and left without overwriting.

It's a general belief that once the photos are deleted, they are permanently wiped off, which is wrong. Digital images are stored on memory cards as a file. These files occupy a fixed space on memory cards. Same time it's not necessary that they would be stored in a contiguous fashion.

When you delete an image or format the card, the space in which the image was stored is not essentially erased. Instead, space is marked as "available", so that the system knows it can write a new image there. This is why the image will no longer be recognized by the camera or computer, even though the image is still present on the card.

Here are a few precautions you need to follow and this is essential if you want to recover any of the lost images.

  • Remove the memory card from your camera and put in a safe place so that you won't keep shooting.
  • Stop saving pictures to this card.

If you don't do so, then chances are that the deleted files might be overwritten by the new images and further rendering them unrecoverable.

If neither the camera nor the system can see the lost images, then the only way left is to use specialized photo recovery software.

Lost/deleted digital photo files from a memory card or hard drive can be easily recovered using a right software package. For this, you will need a card reader/writer connected to your PC.
